Strengthening the Fight Against Prescription Drug Abuse
Burke's bill to improve compliance and patient safety approved by Ohio Senate
COLUMBUS— More than 600 million prescription drug doses were issued in 2011 – an increase of 150 million doses since 2007. The Ohio Senate today approved legislation that builds upon earlier efforts to combat prescription drug abuse by strengthening the ability of state officials to oversee pain management clinics and weed out unscrupulous providers.
Under Senate Bill 301, sponsored by Senator Dave Burke (R- Marysville) and Capri Cafaro (D- Hubbard), the State Medical Board would have greater authority to proactively inspect pain management clinics, including those suspected of operating without a license. It also provides better guidance as to which providers and facilities qualify as pain management clinics to eliminate confusion within the medical community. In addition, the legislation allows the State Dental Board to suspend a practitioner’s license if the Board has reason to believe the individual poses a threat to public health through overprescribing or other unscrupulous activities.
“While we have made great strides in the fight against prescription drug abuse since the passage of House Bill 93, there is still more to be done,” Burke said. “Senate Bill 301 will help protect the public’s health by ensuring that medical providers are practicing within accepted medical standards and pain management clinics are in compliance with the law.”
Senator Burke also sponsored House Bill 93, legislation approved last year that addressed the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Ohio by placing greater accountability on medical professionals and giving local law enforcement more tools to uncover and prosecute criminal activity.
Senate Bill 301 now moves to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
Senator Burke represents the 26th Ohio Senate District, which encompasses all of Crawford, Logan, Marion, Sandusky, Union and Wyandot counties as well as portions of Ottawaand Seneca counties. For more information, please visit www.ohiosenate.gov/dave-burke.html.
